Intel system emulates 8 million neuronsEnormous progress in the simulation of neural systems
Intel has developed a system simulating a total of 8 million neurons. It is based on 3 Lakemont management cores, coordinating 64 Loihi neuromorphic chips, analogue circuits launched in October 2017 emulating the neurobiological structures of the nervous system.
Loihi units are 60 millimeters in size and contain over 2 billion transistors, 130,000 artificial neurons and 130 million synapses.
They are 1,000 times faster and 10,000 more efficient than traditional processors. They use only 30% more power when scaled 50 times, while traditional hardware uses 500% more power, and consume about 100 times less energy than the widely used localization and mapping methods nowadays.
By the end of the year, Intel will launch an even bigger Loihi system, which will provide over 100 million neurons. |
